The Heart of a Disciple: Paul’s Journey of Resilience and Ving Tsun
The Heart of a Disciple: Paul’s Journey of Resilience and Ving Tsun
At Moy Yee Hop Ving Tsun, we often say that Kung Fu is a way of life, not just a way of fighting. No one exemplifies this better than Paul, an Assistant Instructor at both our Jupiter and Port Saint Lucie locations. As a dedicated disciple of Sifu James Hindman, Paul is a pillar of our community—known for his patience with our youngest students and his unwavering integrity. But Paul’s path hasn't been easy. From major health transformations to surviving life-threatening setbacks, his story is a testament to what focus, discipline, and a "Kung Fu family" can truly achieve.

How has Ving Tsun helped you develop discipline and focus in your daily life?
Practicing Ving Tsun has allowed me to sharpen my focus across all aspects of my life, most notably regarding my health. At my heaviest, I weighed over 310 pounds. Through my training, I developed the mental discipline to focus on my health, working steadily toward my goal weight of 180 pounds. Despite various setbacks, I remain fully committed to that mission. This "Kung Fu focus" also carries over into my professional life, helping me stay grounded and productive in both my private business and my work for the government.
"You can never define yourself by your setbacks... you learn from them and come back better."

Can you share a training experience that challenged your perspective?
A pivotal moment for me was learning Tsui Ma (Pushing Stance). Because I was a larger person at the time, I assumed I would be difficult to move. I quickly learned that wasn't the case! I was moved quite easily by practitioners who were much smaller than me but further along in the system. I had to entirely shift my mindset. I realized that Ving Tsun isn’t about raw strength; it’s about understanding energy—learning to shift and redirect your opponent’s power to your own advantage.
"It's not about strength; it’s about using the energy to your advantage."

How do you demonstrate respect and humility within the school?
I strive to be a constant source of encouragement for my fellow students. We all face unique challenges, and I try to lead by example, showing that we must rise to meet them. I take great pride in assisting my "younger brothers and sisters" (junior students) when they struggle with a technique or need advice on a specific section. Furthermore, I show respect to my Sifu by being dependable—whether that’s helping with classes, organizing events and trips, or simply ensuring Sifu is taken care of during our travels.

How do you handle setbacks or failures in your training?
I’ve learned that while we can’t win every battle, we can always choose to persevere. I have faced two major hurdles: first, a congenital medical condition that forced me to take time away from the mats, and more recently in February 2024, a near-fatal experience with carbon monoxide poisoning. During my recovery, I realized I wasn’t alone. My parents and my Kung Fu family were there for me every step of the way. I returned to class within just three months; my doctors and therapists were amazed at how quickly I bounced back. I’ve learned that you cannot define yourself by your failures—you learn from them and return stronger.
"Coming to Kung Fu classes accelerated my recovery. I wasn't alone; I had my Kung Fu family."

In what ways do you support your peers on their journey?
The best way to support the family is to be present. I make sure everyone knows they have my support, whether that is helping them troubleshoot a difficult technique or helping organize the trips and events that bring us together. Celebrating the "Kung Fu life" as a family is what makes our bond so strong.

What is your history within the Moy Yee Hop family?
I began my journey in August 2016 at the Lake Worth school under Sigung Julian Cordero. When Sifu James Hindman opened the Jupiter school in 2016, Sigung recommended I train there since I lived in the area. I was one of Sifu James’s first students. Even when I had to take breaks for medical reasons or personal loss, Sifu James always kept in touch. In August 2022, I became a Special Student Disciple under Sifu James, committing myself to completing the system. The knowledge I’ve gained and the global brotherhood I’ve met through trips to New York and Atlanta are priceless experiences I will carry with me forever.
Closing Thoughts
Paul’s journey reminds us that the true measure of a martial artist isn't found in a trophy, but in the ability to stand back up when life knocks you down. As an Assistant Instructor, he brings that same resilience and heart to every student he coaches. Whether you are a parent looking for a patient mentor for your child or an adult looking to transform your own life, Paul is a shining example of what is possible at Moy Yee Hop Ving Tsun Kung Fu.
